Arriving at the cave entrance, the excitement begins as we start our journey into “Xibalba”, tactically around columns and crystalline formations with the help of the guide-at times nearly crawling past the calcite formations as you enter through a narrow, and at times-steeply descending pathway.

Once inside the main cave, you will find yourself surrounded by an amazing crystal cave that was used by ancient Maya shamans (priests) for ritual ceremonies that were performed thousands of years ago. Fire pits, exposing the ashes of ancient fires; charcoal pieces; beads; obsidian knives; ceramics & broken pottery; a human skeleton, calcified in the limestone floor, also evidence of the flourishing ancient Maya civilization.

A carved monument discovered at Cahal Pech is also the earliest carved stelae yet discovered in the eastern Maya lowlands.

Located on a natural limestone ridge, the site provides panoramic views of the hilly Cayo Distric.

The Xunantunich Maya temples can only be accessed by a 19th century old hand-cranked ferry, which crosses the Mopan River. Xunantunich flourished during the Classic-period and appears to have survived the Maya “collapse” and remained an important population center until around AD 1000.

The site boasts one of the most impressive structures in Belize: El Castillo – a 130ft pyramid that dominates the landscape. A steep, but short climb to the top is recommended as this vantage point provides a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding Mopan and Belize River valleys. You will certainly hear the Howler Monkey’s howl as you enter the sanctuary. One of the most remarkable traits of the howler monkey is its loud, rasping howl, which can be heard roaring across the forest for well over a mile. It is one of the six howler monkey species found in Central and South America. It is one of two monkeys found in Belize, the other being the spider monkey. The Sanctuary was established to help address this threat by showing landowners the benefits of preserving their lands for the monkeys. The Baboon Sanctuary is done as a combo package with includes a visit to the Altun Ha Mayan Ruin.

The name “Lamanai” means submerged crocodile. The area around the Altun Ha is rich in wildlife including armadillos, bats, squirrels, agouti, paca, foxes, raccoons, coati, tyra, tapir and the white-tailed deer. Two hundred species of birds have been recorded and there are large crocodiles that inhabit the Maya-made water reservoir.
There are no stelae at Altun Ha but the discovery of rich tombs indicates that the ruling elite enjoyed access to substantial amounts of exotic goods. Another interesting part of this site is the presence of a large, water reservoir called “Rockstone Pond”. The bottom of this reservoir is lined with yellow clay giving the bottom firmness capable of retaining water.

“The Belize Zoo is the perfect way to experience Belize’s untamed jungles and savannas. From the beginning, it was apparent that Belizeans were not familiar with the different species of wildlife that shared their country and great efforts were made to transform the little zoo into a dynamic wildlife education center. The Tropical Education Center was started in 1983 to provide a home for wild animals featured in various documentaries. Enjoy the awesome range of mammals, birds and reptiles in their natural habitat, including jaguars, howler monkeys, toucans, egrets, crocodiles, and tree frogs. You will spend approximately 4½ hours touring the zoo and educational center before returning from one of the amazing Belize tours.
